Why an infusion?

What makes a vitamin infusion different from tablets

With a vitamin infusion, often called an IV drip or IV therapy, vitamins and minerals go through a vein straight into your bloodstream. There's no detour through the stomach and gut. That's why higher doses can be given comfortably, for example when tablets aren't enough or upset your stomach. Whether an infusion makes sense for you is something we discuss openly at the first consultation. And if it doesn't, we'll tell you.

Fully into the bloodstream

What goes in through the vein reaches your bloodstream in full, no matter how well your gut is absorbing nutrients at the moment.

Tailored to you

At the first consultation we look together at whether an infusion suits you, and which one. If you want to know exactly, you can have your blood levels checked beforehand.

Careful, attentive care

The doctor prescribes your infusion. A registered nurse puts it in and keeps an eye on you, in the calm setting of a GP practice.

Medical reasons only, no wellness offers

We only give an infusion when there is a medical reason for it. Dr. Niemeck clarifies this at the first consultation and records the reason in his prescription. These are the reasons patients come to us with:

  • a confirmed vitamin or mineral deficiency
  • prevention, if the doctor finds an increased risk of a deficiency
  • recovery after an infection or illness
  • recovery after surgery
  • tablets aren't tolerated or aren't enough

We don't offer infusions purely for wellbeing, beauty or performance.

What we offer

Vitamin infusions in Vienna: four classics and one alternative

From the high-dose vitamin C drip to the Myers' Cocktail: we work with common combinations and explain exactly what's in them. If you can't have high-dose vitamin C, you don't have to miss out. There is an infusion with no vitamin C at all as an alternative.

High-dose vitamin C

Only possible as an infusion in this amount

Vitamin C in an amount you could never reach with tablets, which can only be given through a vein. Whether and when that makes sense for you is something the doctor will discuss with you.

The alternative when vitamin C isn't an option

An infusion with no vitamin C at all: B vitamins, vitamin B12 and magnesium, with zinc and selenium added if needed. It is an option for anyone who can’t have high-dose vitamin C, for example with G6PD deficiency, oxalate kidney stones or iron overload disease. Whether it’s right for you is something the doctor will discuss with you.

Ingredients
  • Vitamin B complex & vitamin B12
  • Magnesium

Good to know: Dr. Niemeck only prescribes an infusion after the first consultation and sets the dose and combination for you. Whether a single infusion or a course makes sense, and how far apart, is also something he decides at the first consultation.
Haemolaser therapy in Vienna

Haemolaser in Vienna, straight after your infusion

With the Haemolaser (intravenous laser blood irradiation), a very thin light fibre is passed through the IV line. It shines red laser light (660 nm) onto the blood flowing past. With us, this happens right after your infusion, through the same line. So you need neither a second needle nor a separate appointment.

  • No extra needle. The sterile single-use fibre goes into the cannula that's already in place.
  • 20 to 30 minutes, painless. You simply stay seated. Side effects are rare. Some people feel a little tired or notice a slight warmth on the day of treatment.
  • Use: In complementary medicine based on practical experience, the Haemolaser is used among other things for exhaustion and circulation problems. Whether sessions make sense for you, and how many, is decided by the doctor.
  • To be upfront: The Haemolaser belongs to complementary medicine based on practical experience, and there are only a few studies on it so far. Whether it can help you is something we'll discuss honestly at the first consultation.

Private health insurance

Austrian public health insurance (ÖGK, BVAEB, SVS, KFA) unfortunately doesn't cover vitamin infusions. Many private supplementary and international health insurance plans do reimburse private doctors and private services, in full or in part.

  • You receive detailed invoices listing all services, for the consultation with Dr. Niemeck (Wahlarzt, i.e. private doctor) and for the infusion from Pflegstro.
  • How much you get back depends on your policy. It's best to check briefly with your insurer beforehand.
  • We're happy to help you submit them.

Payment

You pay directly at the practice, in cash or by card. There's no subscription and no minimum number of appointments.

Course price

If Dr. Niemeck prescribes a course of at least 5 infusions, you pay the course price shown in the table for each of them. You still pay at each appointment. Nothing has to be paid in advance, and nothing expires.

Cancellations

Cancelling up to 24 hours beforehand is free of charge. If you cancel later or don't come, we charge the full price of the booked infusion or Haemolaser session, because we kept the time free for you. If you suddenly fall ill or have an emergency, we waive the fee. Details in our terms.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about vitamin infusions

Do vitamin infusions actually make sense?

It really depends on your situation. If a deficiency has been confirmed, your needs are higher right now (for example with infections, after an illness or after surgery), or you don’t tolerate tablets well, an infusion can make sense. The nutrients then reach your bloodstream in full and at a higher dose. If you eat a balanced diet and aren’t lacking anything, an infusion won’t do much. We’ll tell you that honestly at the first consultation. A blood test beforehand gives you clarity.

Do you offer wellness or beauty drips?

No. We only treat patients who have a medical reason for an infusion. That can be a confirmed deficiency, an increased risk of one, or recovery after an infection, an illness or surgery. Dr. Niemeck clarifies at the first consultation whether there is such a reason. We don’t offer infusions purely for wellbeing, beauty or performance.

Who are vitamin infusions suitable for?

For adults with increased needs or a deficiency. Common reasons for a consultation are exhaustion that has lasted for a while, recurring infections, or recovering from an illness or surgery. Dr. Niemeck will clarify at the first consultation whether an infusion makes sense in your case. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, infusions are only possible after careful medical assessment.

I can't have high-dose vitamin C. Is there an alternative?

Yes. High-dose vitamin C isn’t suitable if you have G6PD deficiency (favism), reduced kidney function, oxalate kidney stones or iron overload disease (haemochromatosis). For these cases we offer an infusion with no vitamin C at all, with B vitamins and magnesium, plus zinc and selenium if needed. Dr. Niemeck will decide at the first consultation whether this or another option suits you, especially if your kidney function is reduced. Please bring any medical reports you already have.

Do I need a consultation first?

Yes, because every infusion is prescribed by a doctor. The consultation takes about 20 minutes and is only needed once. After that, you can arrange follow-up appointments directly with us. If you like, and the doctor agrees, you can have your first infusion straight after the consultation.

Do I need a blood test?

Not necessarily, but it often helps. Your vitamin levels show whether, and where, you’re really lacking something, and make it easier to choose the right infusion. Dr. Niemeck will discuss with you whether a blood test makes sense in your case. The results are usually ready within a few days.

How long does an infusion take and what does it feel like?

Between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the infusion. You sit comfortably and can read or simply close your eyes. The needle feels much like having blood taken. Some people notice a slight feeling of warmth or a metallic taste in their mouth. This usually passes quickly.

How often should I have an infusion?

Dr. Niemeck decides this at the first consultation, depending on your situation and what you’re hoping for. It may be a single infusion, for example after an illness, or a course at set intervals. We’ll talk together about how to continue after that.

What is the Haemolaser, and does it hurt?

No, it doesn’t hurt. A very thin light fibre is passed through the cannula that’s already in place from your infusion, and it shines red laser light onto your blood for 20 to 30 minutes. You won’t feel a thing. You can also book the Haemolaser on its own, in which case we put in a separate line for it. Whether it’s right for you is something the doctor will discuss with you.

What are the side effects of a vitamin C infusion?

If the infusion is right for you, it’s usually well tolerated. Occasionally there may be a small bruise where the needle went in, a brief feeling of warmth, slight tiredness or a metallic taste. Before high-dose vitamin C, your kidney function and a possible G6PD deficiency need to be checked. Dr. Niemeck takes care of this at the first consultation. A registered nurse looks after you throughout the infusion, and infusions take place during practice hours at Dr. Niemeck’s practice.

How long does vitamin C stay in the body after an infusion?

After a high-dose infusion, vitamin C levels in the blood stay high for a few hours. Whatever your body doesn’t need is excreted through the kidneys within about 24 hours. Whether further infusions make sense, and how far apart, is decided by the doctor.

Can I get a vitamin infusion at a GP practice?

Yes. With us, you have your infusion at Dr. Gerhard Niemeck’s GP practice in 1030 Vienna, with a medical consultation on site. That’s what sets us apart from pure “IV drip lounges”: a doctor checks whether the infusion is right for you, and a registered nurse puts it in and monitors it.

Does health insurance cover the costs?

Austrian public health insurance doesn’t, unfortunately. Vitamin infusions are a private service. You’ll receive a detailed invoice from us that you can submit to your private supplementary or international health insurance. Whether and how much you get back depends on your policy. It’s best to check briefly with your insurer beforehand.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

Usually within a few days. Just give us a call or write to us using the form. We’ll get back to you with a suggested appointment within 24 hours on working days.

What if I need to cancel an appointment?

Please cancel by phone or email at least 24 hours beforehand, and there’s no charge. If you cancel later or don’t come, we charge the full price of the booked infusion or Haemolaser session, because we kept the time free for you. If you suddenly fall ill or have an emergency, we waive the fee. For the first consultation with the doctor, Dr. Niemeck’s practice’s own cancellation terms apply. You’ll find everything else in our terms.
